It was said that The Wind Rises would most likely be Miyazaki’s last film, but that turned out not to be the case. And The Boy and the Heron will not necessarily be the final chapter of his career either, though it is possible to see from it a bit of creative repetition as he looks back to his own work and passes the torch to the younger generation in the end, which is also presented in the story. In any case, the master of animation and film narrative has not eased up in terms of the number of ideas, the diversity of his visions and the depth of the ideas presented; his film looks beautiful and overflows with the magical, dreamlike, fairy-tale elements that can be alternately cruel and tender. The introduction of the film is uncomplicated and practically devoid of the supernatural, but as soon as the titular heron smiles and begins speaking with a human voice and the main (unfortunately not very interesting) protagonist falls into the fantasy world, in which he must come to terms with the loss of his mother and with feelings of pain, loneliness, anger and sadness, Miyazaki’s powers of imagination and playfulness kick into high gear. However, the effort to say as much as possible in the space of two hours leads to the fact that the film is very dense in places and doesn’t let some of the scenes fade out properly. At the same time, Miyazaki returns to his tried-and-try story formulas (he most noticeably draws from his own Spirited Away) and frequently used trademarks. The Boy and the Heron is practically a catalogue of everything that can be associated with Miyazaki’s films, but it doesn’t reach the level of his best works.

No words, and yet so much emotion. The friendship between a dog and a robot in 1980s New York has only just begun when the two protagonists are separated from each other (due to consumer negligence and underestimation of the effects of corrosion) and the film tells their stories separately. However, each of them has the same dreams about the other, from which the film gets its title. After the initial joy, the plot takes a quite sad turn, so the prevailing feeling from the film is rather melancholy, which is reversed in the end, though that does not entirely involve a fairy-tale happy ending. Though the animation is simple, it contains a very large number of endearing and funny details and works very effectively with the characters’ facial expressions and body language. The film will also be appreciated by adults (perhaps even more than children) who have life experience and are aware that true friendship requires a joint effort and is a commitment to looking after one another. Robot Dreams is deeper and emotionally more complex than it may appear at first glance.

Une chasse aux sorcières moderne dans un environnement urbain, dont la principale protagoniste est une guérisseuse orientale, en réalité une charlatane qui parasite les souffrances des crédules, victime de l'hystérie collective résultant de préjugés et de calomnies, avec des conséquences dévastatrices pour elle. Un drame réaliste sur les effets néfastes des actes motivés par la conviction religieuse, où la lutte pour la survie devient une lutte pour sauver son fils. Le film parvient à susciter de la compassion pour l'héroïne, même si elle n'est pas présentée de manière positive au départ, en plus de posséder des personnages bien écrits, des situations fortes, de nombreux animaux exotiques et une scène qui vous fera tordre les doigts de pied par son caractère désagréable.

Jusqu'au dernier quart, il s'agit d'une étude psychologique minimaliste fascinante et astucieusement réalisée, avec deux personnages réunis par le destin dans un lieu isolé et entre lesquels une tension nerveuse est habilement construite sur une longue période. Le travail solide avec l'obscurité, le montage et les sons de l'orage environnant aide également. Cependant, cela est gâché par une conclusion narrativement confuse qui tente au dernier moment de relier tous les motifs, de surprendre avec de nouveaux rebondissements et peut-être même de choquer un peu, mais cela est fait trop hâtivement et de manière chaotique.

Un geyser inédit de créativité dans la meilleure comédie de ces dernières années et en même temps une mise à jour surprenante du grotesque du 21e siècle. Buster Keaton et Harold Lloyd serrent ici la main de Bugs Bunny et du coyote Vil Coyote, et c'est Karel Zeman qui les dirige, venant de découvrir les possibilités de la création graphique par ordinateur. La confirmation définitive de l'idée qu'un petit budget n'est pas un obstacle lorsque l'on a suffisamment d'idées et de capacités créatives. Dans le cas de Hundreds of Beavers, les créateurs regorgent d'idées, ils en ont jeté tellement dans le film qu'ils en ont largement épuisé toute la durée, et ils ont transformé les ressources limitées pour la réalisation du film en un avantage, de sorte que le résultat est à la fois incroyablement drôle, créatif et charmant sur le plan visuel. L'intrigue ne s'arrête pas un instant, les différents gags évoluent progressivement et atteignent des niveaux imprévisibles, le film travaille magnifiquement avec les personnages et les motifs récurrents et exploite pleinement l'environnement de la forêt enneigée ainsi que les accessoires associés. Une affaire unique et sûrement aussi un futur classique culte.

Un jeune homme va se marier, mais la veille du mariage, il tombe pendant la nuit dans un puits non couvert, d'où il ne peut pas sortir. Une prémisse simple se transforme finalement en un jeu de mystère assez amusant et drôle, qui sait surprendre par l'évolution inattendue des événements. Le retournement forcé dans la deuxième moitié est cependant une arme à double tranchant, il surprend et modifie en quelque sorte le thème du film mais, en même temps, il se tire une balle dans le pied avec une narration de l'intrigue trop combinée, pleine de lacunes.

Le film traite d'un cas réellement tragique survenu en 1993, où un groupe de fanatiques religieux a effectué un rituel d'exorcisme sur une femme psychiquement malade, la soumettant ainsi inutilement à des tortures mentales et à des violences physiques. Il est positif que le film aborde le thème des actes potentiellement destructeurs commis par des personnes agissant aveuglément au nom de leur foi et de leurs convictions, mais il le fait dans la mauvaise direction. Le film a été conçu comme un drame psychologique émotionnellement intense, cependant ses créateurs essayent de tirer un peu trop de l'histoire, en ajoutant de l'horreur exorciste (avec des visions sataniques très mal réalisées et des faux-sursauts très grossiers). Jusqu'à la fin, le spectateur est tourmenté par l'idée que la victime était peut-être réellement possédée par le diable, mais cette ambiguïté intentionnelle crée une confusion dans le ton du film, affaiblit son message et le rend parfois involontairement ridicule.

This well-known story of the air crash in the snow-covered Andes whose survivors had to resort to cannibalism had already been told in the 1993 American film Alive. In comparison with that film, Bayona offers a more modern take with top-quality filmmaking (including excellent camerawork and an intense scene involving the crash itself). In addition to that, he returns this story about the power of the human will and tenacity to the Spanish-speaking realm. But that’s basically all there is to it, because the film naturally doesn’t have much to surprise us with in terms of plot. With few exceptions, the individual characters are interchangeable and their agonisingly bad fortune serves mainly to make an emotional impact on viewers. However, the film is likable in that it is a truly honest and thoroughly realistic survival drama that is unburdened by the necessity of cramming the plot with personal conflicts between the characters, who can thus focus more on the practical side of their own survival. The low degree of pathos and the very subtle and humane approach to the issue of eating human flesh are also pleasing.

After suffering a head injury, a small girl lies in a coma and her subsequent story is intertwined with her journey through a fantasy world in which she repeatedly escapes death and encounters various other creatures. The result is a surrealistic variation on Alice in Wonderland that was made by the father of the five-year-old girl in the lead role as his own original project over the course of six years. It is necessary to appreciate the film for its well-thought-out creative side and the rendering of the puppet animation sequences, which must have required a tremendous amount of hard work. The child actress in the lead role is excellent. The style of the animation and the dark atmosphere of Moon Garden are reminiscent of Mad God (though it isn’t as bloody and disgusting, but I still wouldn’t let children watch it, as some of the scenes are truly terrifying and intense). Unfortunately, it also shares with Mad God the fact that the viewer gets fed up with this load of visual ideas after a while, because there isn’t much else to rely on in the simple plot. The film will thus most likely remain in the viewer’s memory only as a likably bizarre sequence of psychedelic scenes interspersed with a hospitalised little girl’s recollections of both happy and agonising family moments.

A powerfully effective and imaginative horror movie about various sleep disorders including extreme somnambulism, when a person become dangerous both to themselves and those around them. The nightmares of the married couple are conveyed from the perspective of the anxious woman, who is legitimately worried that her sleepwalking husband could kill their newborn. The suspensefully constructed story is then gradually given unexpected dimensions, offering both plot twists and small islands of effective situational humour.
