Child's Play : La poupée du mal

Il serait naïf de vouloir aujourd'hui un remake de Jeu d'enfant. Les années 80, qui ont nourri des sujets similaires, sont depuis longtemps révolues. Mais il est louable de constater qu'il ne s'en sort pas si mal. L'amélioration du sujet en connectant la poupée au téléphone portable et en exploitant l'intelligence artificielle s'inscrit dans l'époque actuelle et, malgré le fait que la magie de Chucky dérape dans les scènes ultérieures, en dehors de toute logique technologique, cela donne un effet convaincant. Il est impossible de considérer cela comme un film d'horreur (à moins d'avoir huit ans), ce dont il est conscient lui-même, et il allège même la scène la plus brutale avec un humour ironique. L'apparence de Chucky avec ses yeux qui brillent en rouge (quand il est en colère) est cool, et sa descente progressive vers la violence est bien dépeinte. Ce sont les meilleurs passages du film. Le final « grandiose », qui cherche à dynamiser l'évolution initiale plus intimiste de l'intrigue est, au contraire, plombé par des moments clichés et peu imaginatifs. Cela aurait dû mûrir davantage dans l'esprit du scénariste. (05/01/2022)

The Child’s Play brand is unnecessarily applied to this film, but I really like this technological update. And when it comes to “remakes”, I like those that aren’t afraid of reworking the original, which to a great extent is the case here; so, basically… satisfaction. It’s well crafted, the characters are likeable and it’s well acted. On top of that, the film is permeated with an effective humour that’s quite fitting (certainly more than in this year’s It). And for a “kids” horror, it’s also quite bloody. My biggest problem, though, is with the look of the titular doll. It’s ugly AF and I can’t believe that any company would design their super commercial toy like this. (10/09/2019)

Can the Chucky doll be taken seriously? I don’t think so. And even though the film tries to milk the audience’s emotions and convey some sort of moral message, it is still a remake of a horror classics that doesn’t deserve more than three stars. On the contrary, three stars might be more than enough here. Moreover, the movie tries to copy the atmosphere of Stranger Things or It, but doesn’t really succeed in doing so. (11/12/2019)

Thirteen-year-old Andy has a new toy, a supermodern doll called Chucky. And Chucky's a little broken, so he starts killing people to make Andy happy. This new version of the horror classic doesn't scare too much, but it entertains with comic brutality, decent actors and a Stranger Things-style atmosphere. Nothing great, but as a horror one-off, the new Child's Play holds up. (26/07/2019)

A pretty decent new version of Chucky. Chucky was never one of my favourite horror properties, so I approached the film more coldly, but in the end a nice surprise. Chucky's Design didn't do much, but the main characters did a good job. I enjoyed the cop, there was some humour and surprisingl it's nicely brutal, at least the scene with the lawnmower and saw is worth it. It's a shame the finale didn't push things further, but still on the whole a satisfying flick. 65%. (17/09/2019)

I liked the idea that admiring "fun" violence can very easily lead to real violence, if the man or the redheaded doll lacks discernment and if he skips over it for certain reasons. The new Child's Play delighted me with this, as much as with its more careful (by the standards of a horror movie about a murderous toy, that is, of course) portrayal of children (yes, there are a few of them, and that's a good thing) and adults, or its grand finale, which could easily have been bigger. On the plus side, I'd like to add Bear McCreary's score, which I thought was just fantastic – it practically keeps playing with the Buddy toy tune, also composed by McCreary, and it's very entertaining. Like the whole film. It's on a par with the original Child's Play. (27/07/2019)

Je ne m’attendais pas à grand-chose parce que, ces temps-ci, un remake sur dix n’est qu’un vulgaire parasite de l’original. Par contre, le nouveau Child’s Play, avec sa vision fraîche et moderne de la poupée meurtrière mythique, est étonnamment divertissant. Son atout principal ? Il offre ce qui manquait tant à la trilogie originale : une bonne dose d’humour – ainsi que des personnages principaux attachants auxquels on souhaite de survivre jusqu’au film suivant. Eh oui, dans ce cas-ci, j’en redemande ! Bien sûr, il y a quelques ombres au tableau, que les créateurs auraient pu éviter (comme les yeux maléfiques rougeoyants de Chucky qui, je trouve, sont un trucage cheap et futile), mais, dans l’ensemble, c’est une comédie d’horreur divertissante qui est fraîche, bien jouée, étonnamment drôle et tout simplement satisfaisante à tous les niveaux. If 2019's Child's Play was an original movie and not building on something that has been around for quite a while, plus there had not been a sequel in the original franchise two years ago, I would have probably given the movie a better rating because it manages to be entertaining and slightly creepy, although I think the original Child's Play is better at this. However, simply the fact that it is a remake makes me not take it that seriously. (11/10/2019)
