Prey

Il faut croire que je suis à contre-courant. Un retour aux sources et à une simplicité sans prise de tête, la saga des prédateurs en avait besoin, sauf que la façon de le faire diffère royalement de ce que j’imaginais d’une version fonctionnelle. À la différence du Predator originel, qui est un thriller modèle et dans lequel tout fonctionne impeccablement, Prey ne fonctionne pas du tout d’un point de vue dramaturgique. Le spectateur se retrouve noyé dans des dialogues inintéressants, un suspense inexistant, la non-transformation des personnages et une action certes ininterrompue, mais qui en devient justement – et dès les premières minutes – si routinière qu’elle cesse rapidement de divertir. De plus, les afflux d’animaux numériques et les effets CGI utilisés même là où ils ne sont pas nécessaires affaiblissent terriblement le tout. C’était censé être le Predator le plus naturel de tous, mais il s’avère finalement le plus artificiel de tous. Un beau foirage ! (10/08/2022)

Une aventure forestière dense teintée d'une agréable poésie amérindienne et le retour spectaculaire du deuxième meilleur monstre cinématographique de tous les temps. Le scénario est efficace et contient de jolis détails et des surprises, l'action est magnifiquement fluide et cinétique. L'élément de pouvoir féminin semble naturel et crédible, le thème « sauvages contre sauvages dans le désert » est attrayant et parfaitement utilisé. Les acteurs et les masques sont corrects, l'inconnue Amber Midthunder est dix fois meilleure que l'oscarisé Adrien Brody (Predators de Nimród Antal étant par ailleurs un film solide). On peut reprocher des petites choses au film, comme le combat final qui aurait pu être plus réfléchi et moins précipité, mais en proportion de la satisfaction générale, ce sont des détails. Aucune série de films ne meurt, mais attend juste la bonne personne. En ce qui concerne cette saga, Dan Trachtenberg a choisi sa propre voie comme aucun autre réalisateur avant lui, il y a mis tout son cœur et a réussi avec brio. Un film de cinéaste cinéphile de talent, pour les cinéphiles. (10/08/2022)

Dan Trachtenberg gave me a similar pleasure as he did with 10 Cloverfield Lane. Predator: Prey is a confidently made adventure horror film that isn't afraid to go its own way, and at the same time, I dare say it will please fans of Predator more than anything that came after the second film. And like 10 Cloverfield Lane, the trailers are pretty deceptive and the film ends up having a slightly different feel and pace than you might expect. Still, I think I enjoyed the first half more, where there's no rush to get anywhere and the Comanche setting is unadorned and quite attractive. And while there's no Arnold, these tough guys from the American plains aren't wimps either. The main character is also very easy to root for. What I enjoyed most, however, was the way Trachtenberg treats the Predator itself in the first half. It gets an unexpected amount of space here, and for the first time we get to see it properly as a hunter, and a very fierce and cruel one at that. The new Predator won't rewrite the history of the genre or the brand, but it's a well made and above all cleverly conceived film. The former is what we hoped for, the latter is what I personally didn't expect, and I'm all the more pleased about it. It was a success. (05/08/2022)

A bit of a better made-for-TV movie. The few panoramic shots try to give the impression of visual richness and grandeur à la National Geographic, but for the vast majority of the time it's just a visually poorer film that doesn't belong in the cinema and the streaming format suits it. It doesn't lack a few neatly severed heads, what it lacks the oppressive atmosphere of the first one, which is on a completely different level. The Indians lack believability, and when I compare it to the likes of Mel Gibson's Apocalypto, which literally worked wonders with a comparable budget in terms of period authenticity and visual gore, I almost want to cry. A female protagonist in a predator franchise is an interesting idea, unfortunately in a film where only the bear scene stands out from the average. And no, the heroine's final fight, which turns the Predator into an incompetent moron, I really didn't buy that one. Arnold could beat such a naive slob with just his farts. (07/08/2022)

A straightforward intimate period survival "from the mud to the puddle and back to the mud again" that would stand on its own, especially when it is functionally, and not just for show, set in the Predator universe. It's not without many "buts" (the atmosphere should have been thicker, it could have done with even more reliance on practical effects instead of digital, at times it feels like an adaptation of a rebooted Tomb Raider, and the English language didn't need to be so overused), but who cares when it works so well.
