Taiwan is beset by a terrible water shortage. TV stations are advising the population to economise drastically, and to drink watermelon juice. But as always people are finding their own solutions to the drought. Shiang-Chyi secretly fills discarded bottles in public toilets, while Hsiao-Kang takes midnight baths in rooftop storage tanks. They drift like clouds, never touching. Survival is hard, but loneliness is impossible to bear. Shiang-Chyi finds a watermelon, and on the same day encounters Hsiao-Kang. She remembers buying a watch from him when he worked as a street vendor. He's a porno actor now, but she doesn't know that yet. She hasn't seen him since, and has no idea what he is doing near her apartment building. They fall in love. (Wild Bunch Distribution)

Bizarre. Very bizarre. Even for Asia. But also original. Very original. Even for Asia. But Tsai’s artsy masturbation over the taste of melons didn’t appeal to me at all. The whole time I couldn’t help feeling that I was watching the cut scenes section and not at the movie itself. But at least the musical scenes hold its head above water, not letting it drown in tedious boredom. They represent if nothing else an absurdly bizarre moment of tension. But what would you expect?

I watched The Wayward Cloud based on a recommendation and also because I like watermelons. It's just that after the opening watermelon scene, there was nothing interesting going on. Basically, it just alternates between lengthy scenes with no dialogue and erotic ones. The musical interludes, the point of which somehow escaped me, didn't appeal to me either. The ending was quite original, but I don't watch movies for the ending. 1.5 stars.

J’ai apprécié l’originalité qui se dégage de pratiquement toutes les prises. Les dix premières minutes étaient épiques. La pastèque est mon légume préféré et cette année, j’en ai bien mangé quelques dizaines de kilos et je serais capable de m’en rendre malade. Puis, la combinaison de la pastèque et de l’érotisme est la meilleure qui soit. La musique et les séquences dansées sont époustouflantes. Je n’avais pas idée que je pourrais prendre plaisir à voir des Chinois qui se balancent en chantant ! La fin était quelque peu exagérée, mais une fois encore, le réalisateur a fait preuve de créativité.
