La Tour sombre (2017)

anglais I haven't read the book, so I’m not worried how faithfully the creators stuck to it. Actually, I don't really care, as I was really quite taken by this action-adventure fantasy directed by Nikolaj Arcel anyhow. The whole move is pretty suspenseful, has a decent pace and a suitably dark atmosphere. I liked the cast too. Not only Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, but also the young talent Tom Taylor all played their roles with dignity and were a joy to watch. (70%)

Un homme en colère (2021)

anglais I have no complaints about the direction and music, both were excellent. However, the screenplay turned out much worse. I don't understand why five people were involved in it if they didn't come up with any good ideas. They had a hard time sweating out the plot, which the average intelligent viewer can easily guess after the first quarter of an hour. But I expect a bit more from a good action movie. At least a moment of surprise would have been nice, but never occurred for the duration of the movie. (55%)

Misbehaviour (2020)

anglais I certainly wouldn't call this movie a comedy. There’s not much to laugh about here, on the contrary, the pretty serious issues of gender equality and racial discrimination are being addressed. The story based on real events is unfortunately handled in a rather uninspiring way. There is a noticeable lack of tension at the tensest moments. The undeniable positives of the film, however, are the good performances by most of the actors and the accurately captured retro atmosphere of the 1970s. (60%)

Matthias et Maxime (2019)

anglais I like Xavier Dolan's work a lot, but Matthias and Maxime didn't quite do it for me. The whole thing is too chatty and basically all about nothing. And isn't wasn’t much of a revelation either. I was intrigued, however, by Gabriel D'Almeida Freitas' portrayal of Matt. Not only does he look good, but he clearly has a strong acting ability. A several-minute scene charged with erotic sparks between Freitas and Dolan is certainly one of the highlights of this movie. (65%)

Lola vers la mer (2019)

anglais Laurent Micheli tells quite an original story about loss, courage, unbridled courage, acceptance of differences and the search for one's own identity. The characters are portrayed with sensitivity and many layers, so I was able to empathize with their problems very easily. Benoît Magimel has matured like wine and portrays the resigned father of the teenage transsexual Lola incredibly convincingly. Equally amazing was Mya Bollaers as his newfound daughter. I also really liked the music, which augmented the emotions and feelings of the main character. (95%)

Mandibules (2020)

anglais I didn't expect the plot to correspond so closely with the mandibles in the title; that alone was enough to amuse me. Quentin Dupieux has created another absurd spectacle, which, surprisingly, suited me rather well. I even found the central pair of dumb-asses likeable, brilliantly portrayed by David Marsais and Grégoire Ludig, let alone Dominica the fly. I laughed a few times, even though I kept wondering what kind of sick brain could have come up with this. (70%)

Krudttønden (2020)

anglais The beginning is perhaps a bit long-winded and confusing before the viewer gets into the plot, but I think this movie is definitely worth watching as it has something to say. Through the real-life story of four men, whose fates collide one day by chance, this movie points out the dismal state of contemporary multicultural society in a typically Scandinavian cold and matter-of-fact way. As a whole, this struck me as being sufficiently emphatic and really spot on. (70%)

Hevi reissu (2018)

anglais "Better to shit yourself than to be forever constipated." - This quote sums this up pretty well... I don't think I've ever seen a musical comedy this good. Since its creators come from Finland, it had to be about hairy metalheads. I willingly admit without torture that I really laughed, even though their was sometimes a hint of awkwardness to this. But if I focus on the best jokes, they totally blew my mind: for example, when they were taking promotional photos using a radar speed gun. Or else, for instance, the singer vomiting on stage was also a good touch. The very nutritious soundtrack remains a matter of course. (80%)

Śniegu już nigdy nie będzie (2020)

anglais Probably like most viewers, I didn't really get this movie, but I was happy to be carried off by the haunting music and the pleasantly dreamy atmosphere on waves of the ethereal. In this context, I have to praise the amazing cinematography of Michał Englert. It's just a great pity that all this beauty clashed somewhat with the sterile world of the rich clients behind the gates. (65%)

La Voix d'Aida (2020)

anglais After watching this alarming movie, I keep on wondering what the UN is good for. When the worst comes to worst, everyone just tries to save their own neck. Quo Vadis, Aida? is a masterfully crafted war drama that certainly deserves the attention of a wider audience. If only to make sure that we do not forget the atrocities that were committed on European soil in relatively recent times. (85%)
