Home Is Here (2016)

anglais I really like the sensitive piano music by Markéta Irglová, which plays in the movie. It is also the reason why the story is so charming. Only the whole thing, including the title, somehow doesn't fit with the sterile and impersonal environment in which the story takes place. Even the acting of most of the characters is cold... Although I wished in my mind for a slightly different denouement, I can't say I was downright disappointed. Because the final revelation is not bad at all. (65%)

Mjólk, La guerre du lait (2019)

anglais "Time for me to live my life, be happy and be free. Now's the time to leave this place, I've got the world to see." - The words of the upbeat final song suggest much about the feelings and future direction of the protagonist Inga, who, after the death of her husband, defies the harsh rules of the community in which she lives. And they do so regardless of whether there is a real chance of making a difference. (75%)

Béliers (2015)

anglais It's been a while since I've seen this chilling Nordic drama, but it's still vivid in my mind. This in itself shows that this is an extremely well-made movie, which also has a strong human story. If you like Icelandic cinema, you'll definitely find it to your liking. (90%)

Les Leçons persanes (2020)

anglais Countless movies have been made about the fate of Jews in occupied Europe and the Holocaust, but this co-production about wartime France, Persian Lessons, is a little different. Maybe it’s the rather unusual story and but also it’s that they don’t try to move the viewer at all costs, although at the end some tears will probably fall. The excellent performances of Nahuel Pérez Biscayart and Lars Eidinger are certainly worth noting, with the latter slowly but surely becoming one of my favorite actors. I would also like to highlight the music, which is really beautiful and fits the plot perfectly. (80%)

Žáby bez jazyka (2020)

anglais I like to watch an artsy film from time to time, but this was pretty extreme, even for me. One can probably appreciate the author's original approach to the theme of family violence, but unfortunately the end result is not so glorious. Mira Fornay should realize that you can't keep on making movies without a positive response from the audience. Unless she wants to finance them herself. However, Regina Rázlová definitely deserves praise for her very precise and mature performance as the selfish mother of the main character. (45%)

Body/Ciało (2015)

anglais This slightly spiritual drama, despite a good dose of black humor, sounds very pessimistic throughout, only to take on an optimistic tone at the very end, raising hope for a better tomorrow. The song that plays in the background is just perfect. (70%)

Lucy in the Sky (2019)

anglais Rather than a space sci-fi, this is a female astronaut’s intimate psychological drama, and as such it works quite well. Not to mention that Natalie Portman plays Lucy Cole very convincingly indeed. However, the movie could have been shorter for my taste. The story is so voluminous that it merits a movie with a playing time of over two hours. (60%)

Nerve (2016)

anglais I don't give a damn about how illogical it was, because I just enjoyed it. Nerve has a likable central couple, a very decent pace, plenty of suspense and a great soundtrack. Far from being just about entertainment, the movie also serves as a warning about the negative impact of modern technology and social networks on the lives of young people. Rapper Machine Gun Kelly makes a couple of cameo appearances as the bad guy and clearly enjoys it. (75%)

All Creatures Great and Small (2020) (série)

anglais "Animals welcome, People tolerated" - that is indeed a very apt inscription on the door of the veterinary surgery run by the three central characters Siegfried Farnon, his younger brother Tristan and James Herriot, who beautifully describes their veterinary practice in his books. The All Creatures Great and Small series reminds me in many ways of Downton Abbey, albeit with a completely different theme and no negative characters. The idyllic landscape of the English countryside in which the story takes place completely enchanted me. All in all, this is a gentle caress for the soul in these hectic and over-technicized times. Trhlina (2019)

anglais Unlike most of the reviewers here, I felt physically uncomfortable in the first half of the movie, so I was oftentimes too scared to breathe while they were wandering through the forest. The atmosphere could be cut with a knife! And the music with those crazy sounds to go with it! Hell, I was really scared. The final denouement didn't satisfy me much and there were a few weak moments during the plot, but it is still a very good horror contribution from our Slovak brothers. I had a comparably intense experience the last time I watched The Blair Witch Project. And this is a really big hats off from me to the creators. (75%)
