Après la perte de sa femme sept ans plus tôt, l’excentrique Dr. John Dolittle (Downey), célèbre docteur et vétérinaire de l’Angleterre de la Reine Victoria s’isole derrière les murs de son manoir, avec pour seule compagnie sa ménagerie d’animaux exotiques. Mais quand la jeune Reine (Jessie Buckley) tombe gravement malade, Dr. Dolittle, d’abord réticent, se voit forcé de lever les voiles vers une île mythique dans une épique aventure à la recherche d’un remède à la maladie. Alors qu’il rencontre d’anciens rivaux et découvre d’étranges créatures, ce périple va l’amener à retrouver son brillant esprit et son courage. Au cours de sa quête, le docteur est rejoint par un jeune apprenti (Harry Collett) et une joyeuse troupe d’amis animaux, dont un gorille anxieux (Rami Malek), un canard enthousiaste mais têtu (Octavia Spencer), un duo chamailleur entre une autruche cynique (Kumail Nanjiani) et un joyeux ours polaire (John Cena), et enfin un perroquet entêté (Emma Thompson), le plus fiable conseiller et confident de Dolittle. Tony Stark's journey came to a close after Avengers: Endgame, so he thought he’d spend some time with animals of various species and sizes to chat with and treat them in his own way. I’m a sucker for computer-generated animals after the new Lion King, and especially after Life of Pi, so I have to point out that in the case of Dolittle, they could have tried a little harder. Aside from that, I found the humour a bit muddled, it was a blatantly childish, black, and even slightly fecal. On the other hand, this is a mostly easygoing film that passes by in the cinema, pleasantly amusing and surprising at times, but definitely don't expect any deeper story. The bonus point at the end was the title song "Original" by Sia.

An average kids’ movie with a high standard of special effects. I can’t understand why Downey decided to make a film like this. He isn’t suited to such acting malarkey and the only thing that could explain it would be that his kids are huge Dolittle fans. However, there are a lot of WTF scenes that make it worth watching. One of the weirdest such scenes is the one where they pull bagpipes out of a dragon’s ass.
