2257. Le vaisseau spatial du commandant Adams a enfin réussi à localiser la planète Altaïr 4 et s’apprête à s’y poser. La mission d’Adams et de son équipage est de découvrir ce qui est arrivé à l’expédition envoyée sur les lieux il y a quelques années de cela. Une fois au sol, ils font la rencontre des deux rescapés : le docteur Morbius et sa fille. Ceux-ci racontent avoir assisté impuissants à la mort mystérieuse du reste de la délégation, et leur font découvrir les prouesses technologiques réalisées par les Krells, les habitants ayant jadis peuplés cette planète.
