Kolya (1996)

anglais A screenplay by Zdeněk Svěrák is a guarantee of quality and a good dose of intelligent humor. Kolja is an excellently written film that can make me laugh out loud. I appreciate that Zdeněk Svěrák manages to avoid cringey melodrama even in scenes that were deliberately written to appeal to emotion. He manages to write them in such a way that they are part of the film and don’t feel distractive. I can’t really think of anything negative to say about this film, I'm simply a fan of Svěrák.

Drôles d'espions (1985)

anglais A crazy cold war comedy which made me laugh a lot, with excellent protagonists Chase and Aykroyd. I could list a few weaker moments, but I don't feel like it. I had way too much fun. “Uh, you have a tent?!!”

Le Sapin a les boules (1989)

anglais A must-see film for me every Christmas. Love, Christmas traditions, and fake emotions are all around me, and the Griswold family can always make me relax and have a good laugh. After all these years I know exactly who will say which line and when, but it still does the trick and I always have a royally good time watching it.

Blackout Total (2014)

anglais The film is far from deep or groundbreaking. Then again, I watched it to have a good laugh and I did spend most of the time laughing, so only 3 stars, but I’m satisfied anyway.

Il était une fois dans l'Ouest (1968)

anglais Absolutely awesome in all respects. The acting, the screenplay, the direction, the cinematography. Everything I can think of is excellent. The film doesn’t have any weaknesses. Even if I did find one, it wouldn't matter. The score would make me forget it immediately. That's what happens when true masters work together. There aren’t enough stars for me to rate this.

Le Sortilège des trois lutins (1980)

anglais Pixar films are great, but to me, nothing beats Karel Zeman’s films. This time it’s more of a fairy tale than a horror film like The Sorcerer's Apprentice, and I’ve loved both films ever since I was a child. Amazing story, fantastic animation, and all that accompanied by the voice of Otakar Brousek make for a perfect combination that I will never grow tired of.

L'Apprenti sorcier (1977)

anglais An incredible film. As a kid, I always looked forward to this fairy tale and I knew that I would not have an easy time of it at night. The Sorcerer's Apprentice was delightfully scary, and it still works for me today, although not to the point of being scared at night. :) Amazing work by Karel Zeman. The atmosphere puts to shame many horror films by established authors.

Stalingrad (1993)

anglais Stalingrad is a compellingly shot war drama that manages to do a lot with little. The film lacks spectacular epic war scenes, focusing more on tunnel warfare, featuring only a single T-34 instead of tons of heavy war machinery, which makes the film all the more impressive. It doesn't portray the Battle of Stalingrad as a gigantic encirclement operation, but describes the fight for the city through the eyes of individual people, giving the story a human dimension that certainly adds to the whole experience. Anyway, it's a refreshing departure from the standard big-budget war films. Plus it's interesting that Karel Heřmánek was cast as a Wehrmacht Hauptmann when he usually plays a Hebrew hunting deer. But it definitely wasn’t a bad move.

L'Opération Corned Beef (1991)

anglais One of the few French films that I've come to love. Unlike the depressing Gabin films and goofy de Funès films, this one’s hilarious and entertaining. Jean Reno is at his best here and it's a joy to watch him move like a fish in water in a plot that is racing forward at a breakneck speed.

Delicatessen (1991)

anglais An excellent pitch-black comedy. I’m not much of a French cinema lover, but I do have a few favorites and Delicatessen has been taking the lead for quite a while. A comedy that is black to the point of cynicism and could be used as the definition of wacky.
