The British pilot Pauline Gower was commissioned to form a women’s team for the ATA civilian air force unit in 1939. Their task was to transport new and repaired aircrafts to RAF pilots. Over 7 million women were mobilized in Britain during World War II. About 450,000 of them were wearing uniforms. Historical films and textbooks usually overlook them, but the army would not have managed without their help. The documentary film Spitfire Sisters focuses on the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) unit, which female pilots were also flying for, in a special section, during the war. Unlike RAF pilots, they usually did not fight against Germans high in the clouds, but their daily work was by no means less dangerous. (Academia Film Olomouc)
