Jiří Suchý – theatre personality, musician, poet, writer, graphic artist, collector, and self-professed clown who is eternally young in spirit – has been one of the key figures of the domestic cultural scene over the last six decades. He has put on 97 plays at the Semafor theatre and has written the lyrics for 1,400 songs and the music for 500. Today, in an era beset by an onslaught of images that are often of questionable worth, this legendary figure’s tireless efforts to enrich the Czech language and its poetic nuances have been of inestimable value. Olga Sommerová lays before us Suchý’s prolific creative and civic journey through life with her customary subtle distinctiveness, demonstrating her singular flair for capturing exceptional moments. Ce portrait gratifiant pour le spectateur, dédié à l'œuvre de Jiří Suchý, est principalement composé de ses récits et souvenirs ainsi que de nombreuses extraits de son travail, des œuvres plus anciennes qu'il composait avec Jiří Šlitr, jusqu'à des projets plus récents de ces dernières années. Cet instructif panorama de la carrière musicale, de chanteur et d'auteur-compositeur de Suchý, qui a dépassé les soixante ans, ne manque pas d'une contextualisation temporelle appropriée, d'un grand nombre d'archives ainsi que d'un nouveau matériel tourné récemment, dans lequel Jiří Suchý, malgré son âge, apparaît toujours en train de plaisanter et exceptionnellement créatif et travailleur avec une bonne humeur et une pensée claire, ce qui ne fait qu'accroître l'admiration pour lui. Le film omet délibérément les faits complètement basiques, les spectateurs idéaux étant donc ceux qui connaissent déjà Jiří Suchý et au moins certaines de ses chansons, qui l'apprécient et qui veulent en savoir plus sur lui.

Jiří Suchý will soon celebrate his 90th birthday. I don’t see a strong reason for this new documentary. Once again, Sommerová just edited many times notorious clips that have been edited before, and had a few new commentaries play over them, of course from people who have been telling the same information all their lives. Perhaps if Sommerová had addressed the last 20 years more, she could have brought us something new. But she just trivialized the already trivialized.

I feel like I spent an evening in the company of Jiri Suchý, who looked back on his life with a twinkle in his eye, wit on his tongue, and a wise peace of mind, telling me everything I've read or heard about in person, and I listened to him without moving, interrupted only and at the most by laughter. It's a quite wonderful feeling.
