The year is 1849. Hungary has been occupied by Austria and is fighting both the Habsburgs as well as the Cossacks. The army has dispersed and now consists of small guerrilla forces in the forests. Young Barnabás has seen his hometown burned down and is looking for his brother who is a soldier. When they reunite, Barnabás is also recruited by the guerrilla. The intrigues thicken when he, out of fear of reprisal, lies about his background as a conscientious objector. The tension further rises when feelings burgeon between Barnabás and a nurse his brother is in love with. Moreover, the enemy lurks in the shadows. György Mór Kárpáti impresses with a gripping melodrama about killing or being killed. A debut with an extremely secure sense of style. (Göteborg Film Festival)
