Le Temps des Gitans

What's great about the film is that on one hand, it's essentially a documentary trying to capture the everyday life of gypsies, but then suddenly there are scenes that are essentially epic and visually stunning. Although the film seems like a comedy at the beginning, its tone grows harsh and unpleasant until the very end. Great film work! (05/09/2017)

I love this gypsy epic the most of all of Kusturic's films. The journey of the young half-breed Perhan from a small Gypsy colony to the big world, where instead of happiness he finds only money and waste, is filmed with empathy and precision, which shows that Kusturica lived among the gypsy community and learned to understand it differently from the directorial "Gadjo". The performances of both the actors and non-actors are excellent, the humor is as black as night, the tragedy is very human, and some scenes have (thanks to Bregovič's famous music) magical enchantment. It's amazing to see the originally cheerful depiction of life in the colony transforming into a tragic conclusion in which Perhan's world collapses like a house of cards. The master in top form!
