Les vaisseaux spatiaux Argos et Galliot s'approchent d'une planète inconnue dont provient un mystérieux signal. Soudain, l'Argos est pris dans une force d'attraction magnétique faisant perdre connaissance à tous les membres de l'équipage, à l'exception du commandant Mark qui parvient à effectuer les manœuvres nécessaires à l'atterrissage. Après que le vaisseau a touché le sol, Mark a cependant la surprise de voir ses compagnons saisis par une rage homicide, dont ils n'ont plus aucun souvenir une fois qu'ils sont revenus à leurs esprits. L'atmosphère extérieure s'avérant respirable, les astronautes se mettent en route pour rejoindre le Galliot qui s'est posé non loin, mais en arrivant, ils constatent que tous les membres de l'équipage se sont entretués. Les deux vaisseaux étant hors d'usage, les survivants se retrouvent donc coincés sur cette étrange planète, désormais convaincus qu'il s'y tapit une force invisible vouée à les mener à leur perte... I must admit that I was expecting a bit more, but on the other hand, it is necessary to realize that this still surpasses many American B-movies from the 50s and 60s. It is beautifully made, with simple but effective studio effects and tricks, suitable for the needs of the film. Moreover, it also has a horror element that is genuinely terrifying. Yeah, as a B-movie, this works really well and I enjoyed it. Additionally, it is visually spectacular. Beautifully kitschy.

Well, yeah. Bava's film is thematically seven to ten years late, it would have fit much better into the '50s, especially considering what Kubrick came up with just three years later (let's be grateful for that timeless work!), but as a distinctive Italian take on the Golden Age, it's actually ok. The first thing that strikes the eye is the cheap-looking spaceship sets and the even cheaper-looking special effects, but Bava did a great job with the planet. He plays with all the colours, the cinematography is fine, and the distinctive visuals are quite different from what was being made in Hollywood studios at the time in the field of cheap sci-fi. You'll probably hate the characters who behave like utter idiots, but the cynical ending will gladden the heart of any nihilist :o)
