We Go On doesn't really try to build atmosphere, but instead it tries to somehow build up the action, which leads to Miles seeing more and more strange things, where he can hardly distinguish between what is and is not reality. Maybe he really did connect to the world after death, but it's not presented in a way that should derail you emotionally in any way - it's not scary, or nostalgic, or sad, or bland.
