De 1599 à 1611, l'ex-duc de Milan a étudié et médité sur une île au milieu d'un immense océan loin de l'Europe. Il y a été exilé avec sa fille Miranda (Isabelle Pasco), maintenant âgée de quinze ans, par son frère Antonio (Tom Bell) et l'allié d'Antonio, Alonso (Michel Blanc), Roi de Naples. Avec le pouvoir et l'autorité qu'il a acquis à l'étude des vingt-quatre ouvrages que son ami Gonzalo (Erland Josephson) a déposé clandestinement sur le navire qui l'emmenait en exil. Prospero (John Gielgud) a réussi à transformer l'île. En homme de la Renaissance nostalgique de Milan, il en a fait un petit royaume italien d'outre-mer. Avec un savoir et une vision qui atteignent la magie, il a fait ériger des palais, des bains et des jardins sur la base de ses modèles italiens favoris. Il a métamorphosé les esprits de l'île en créatures de la Mythologie classique qu'il connaît si parfaitement et a fait construire une bibliothèque riche d'ouvrages. Pourtant, toute sa rancune demeure vis-à-vis des ennemis qui ont usurpé son Duché et il passe ses journées dans son cabinet de travail, à écrire, à méditer, à élaborer ses plans...
