Juin 1939, le Président Franklin D. Roosevelt attend la visite du roi George VI et de son épouse Elizabeth, invités à passer le week-end dans sa propriété à la campagne. C'est la première visite d'un monarque britannique aux Etats-Unis. La Grande-Bretagne se prépare à entrer en guerre contre l'Allemagne et espère obtenir l'aide américaine. Les bizarreries et l'étrange mode de vie du président étonnent les souverains. En ce week-end royal, pris entre les feux de sa femme, sa mère et sa secrétaire, les affaires internationales ne sont pas vraiment la priorité de Roosevelt davantage intéressé par sa relation avec sa cousine Daisy. The biggest drama of this film is actually whether the royal couple will or will not have hot dogs with the president of the United States on a picnic, which are offered to them. The film almost evokes a bit of absurdity, but it ultimately shies away from that and wants to give it proper emotions and historical meaning. Which it doesn't succeed in.

An amusing story that could brighten up your day if it hadn't tripped over its own feet. Laura Linney is magical even approaching fifty, and Bill Murray effortlessly steals all of Hyde Park for himself, but the imbalance of individual episodes and the unbelievable final melodrama do not allow me to rate this any higher. And considering how diligently Roger Michell tries to combine political references with romance, that comes as a true disappointment.
