Après le décès de son maître, le jeune Ip Man continue à apprendre les arts martiaux sous les ordres d'un disciple et part à Hong-Kong. Il revient dans sa ville de Foshan où il tombe amoureux de Wing Shing, malheureusement de rang différent de lui. The whole film is accompanied by a song that we mostly know from Marty Kubišová's performance under the title "Adventure with Mr. Pan". This is a motif that will never get bored of, but of course, the movie doesn't just rely on that. We go back further into Ip Man's past and find out where he learned the art of wing chun and how he perfected it. Here too, there are political elements, elements of oppression, but the foreground is also occupied by romance, which is quite a pleasant refreshment. The younger actor doesn't lose anything from what Donnie Yen had, perhaps only the charisma is still missing. The film lacks more scenes focusing on fights.
