anglais An enjoyable film, but for my taste there is very, very little going on. Philippe Noiret and Catherine Deneuve do look good together, and the rewarding African setting is nice to look at thanks to the impressive production design, but otherwise The African didn't show much. ()

anglais A rather pleasant French comedy that manages to surprise with scenes that suddenly aren't comedic at all, but rather quite serious. The effect they have on the viewer is all the better. Catherine Deneuve and Philippe Noiret worked very well together and made a good duo, but sometimes the environment easily outshined them. ()

anglais The African is a shining example that some films do age. Which is quite a shame. The film is likable, entertaining, and pleasing, but not as much as it was years ago when I first saw it. The humor is not timeless, but rather aging. However, there is something that doesn't age. That would be the actors Catherine Deneuve and Philippe Noiret. The constant teasing between this duo in the film is the most entertaining part, and I acknowledge that some dialogues will still be enjoyable to watch even years later. Their acting hasn't gotten old either and they both do an admirable job. Charlotte may be "only" a beautiful woman who often gets into trouble, and Victor is a real man in the right place, but they are still worth watching. It was a good watch. I'll see what it's like again in a few years. ()
