Saint Ange

Four years before he divided the audience into two irreconcilable camps with his martyr's opus, Pascal Laugier, under the production supervision of Christophe Gans, made quite a decent ghost story. In it, he gives vent to his predilections (a strong female protagonist, the detached atmosphere of the sets) and at the same time shows that he has mastered his craft perfectly. The sympathetic face of Virginie Ledoyen, combined with the creeping camera and ominous music, works wonders. On the other hand, I still maintain that he should have thrown away the pen and paper because the whole thing doesn't make enough sense (even though the artist plays with hints and refuses to be unnecessarily literal) and the ending falls into the category of the unnecessarily self-indulgent. Regardless, thumbs up, with the knowledge that the talent is there. (31/05/2009)

Une… abominable abomination ! C’est pénible à voir dès le moment où Virginie Ledoyen, pourtant bonne actrice, apparaît à l’écran. C’est déjà la deuxième fois qu’elle participe à un film d’horreur très mauvais. J’ai été effrayé une fois, j’ai dû rire aussi une fois, mais surtout, je me suis ennuyé sur toute la durée jusqu’à m’assoupir. Or, je cherchais à me procurer ce film depuis des mois et me réjouissais de voir Saint Ange, malgré le faible niveau des notes qu’on trouve ici. Mais là, je comprends ! Saint Ange est rempli d’une ambiance correcte, mais il ne se passe rien pendant une heure et, alors qu’on s’attend quand même à un final qui décape au moins un minimum, eh bien, on se ramasse une fin encore plus barbante que l’intrigue qui lui a précédé. De plus, pas mal de rapprochements peuvent être faits avec L’Orphelinat. Je ne vais pas débattre de qui a copié qui, mais bon, les films d’épouvante qui se passent dans des orphelinats, sanatoriums et hôpitaux, j’en ai ma claque ! (05/04/2010)
