Pterodactyl

Incredible, but in its badness. A solidly entertaining piece of crap (from the director of Commando!!) that is clamouring for cult status among the fans of bad movies. Already the opening shot of a picturesque Czech village, which according to the filmmakers is supposed to be a kind of seedy Turkish backwater, with bored extras sitting in front of the Municipal Office, who are supposed to represent the squalid, dirty Turkish townspeople, and a poorly drawn volcano in the distance, properly stirs the viewer's diaphragm. The first appearance of the pterodactyls unleashes a whirlwind of ultra-low-budget C-rated entertainment, with tragically directed and decently bloody action, stupid dialogue and special effects from another era. Little Coolio is incredibly awkward with his tough guy pose, Petr Jákl proves in his five-minute cameo that he is definitely the worst living Czech actor (on this occasion one cannot help but recall an interview with him in Reflex, in which he confessed that his acting goal is to win an Oscar....yeah right). The whole thing is so bad in its unwanted (or wanted?) awfulness that it is beautiful and not boring!! Another film which would be a big mistake to judge seriously, with a comparative eye. That's why I overlook the fact that it's filmmaking rubbish and exceptionally give it an amused and very forced 1*! (23/06/2006)

This is exactly what I was looking for. Pterodactyl is so a bad and unintentionally funny that is literally calling for cult status. The scenes at the Turkish-Armenian border and the rope climbing are among the funniest I’ve ever seen. This is a film that anyone who enjoys bad B-movies shouldn’t miss, it’d be hard to find something “better”. Forget all rating systems, I’m giving this at least two stars. (02/08/2008)

Ed Wood feat. Uwe Boll Once upon a time, Pterodactyls appeared in Turkey. No one knows how they got there, but it is certain that somewhere in those forests (which, by pure coincidence, look exactly like Czech forests, particularly the picturesque village with the little church on the hill is a real mystery in a Muslim country) there was also a group of about ten rebels, which the Turkish army couldn't handle, so they had to be subdued by "black-op" American troops, and they were helped by a bunch of enthusiastic pundits in the field whose idiotic behavior and bullshit are only the beginning. The direction is tiresome, the cinematography messy, the music is terrible, the effects are lame, there’s no logic, and this film is definitely the biggest piece of shit in the last however many years. But you definitely have to see it! (29/07/2006)

"Pterodactyl" is not as much of a classic bad film as it is usually rated. Honestly, it is quite an average B-movie, which naturally suffers from a silly plot and bad acting, but it is still quite entertaining and action-packed, which is exactly what you expect from a B-movie. Or at least, what I expect. The Czech influence is not noticeable here, it didn't change much, but I still had a good time, and for that, I am glad. (26/01/2016)
