Rolla, daughter of the local baker gone rich, returns to their country estate from abroad, where she is studying. She falls in love with Baracs Pista, a versatile, popular man, who is also a landowner living in the neighbourhood, known simply as the Honourable Master Pista. Her father also seems to like the hard-working, young man, but her mother, an upstart, rejects his proposal to Rolla, because she has picked count Eleméry to become her daughter's future husband. She successfully upsets Rolla's relationship with Pista by convincing her that all the young man was after was nothing but the dowry. The Horváth family hold a huge party. Count Eleméry, Pista's friend, has a liveried coachman dressed up as a count, to teach the landlady a good lesson. In order to advance the cause of the lovers, the girl's father pretends to have gone bankrupt and starts working as a baker. Pista marries his love without being suspected of being a dowry-hunter.
