A young teen (Lola Petticrew), bedridden with an unnamed disease, finds herself unable to breathe and struggling with overwhelming anxiety. Her mom (the fine Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is in denial, emotionally remote and in serious financial trouble. Enter a strange and searingly lovely being, an angel of sorts, determined to help manage the girl’s suffering. Daina O. Pusić’s wildly imaginative debut feature provides a sophisticated blend of horror, tenderness, tragicomedy, fairytale and philosophical insight so thrilling that you’ll wonder whether to laugh or cry. The girl’s explosive emotions and uncontrollable appetites give rise to astounding bodily transformations (the film, in addition to all else, conjures many exhilarating visual spectacles, with a sensibility that Lewis Carroll might appreciate). Une contemplation de la vie et de la mort en parlant à la Mort, incarnée par un oiseau numérique – parfois assez petit pour tenir dans l’oreille, parfois aussi grand qu’un monstre de cinéma. Et ce n’est que le début. L’étonnement initial du « quel genre de film est-ce là ? » disparaît peu à peu pour laisser place à une allégorie transparente sur l’adieu à un être cher et l’acceptation de sa perte. Mais pourquoi l’auteur a-t-il choisi une voie aussi naïve et enfantinement littérale ? Il s’agit d’une fantaisie bizarroïde similaire au raté Trois mille ans à t’attendre, que les spectateurs pourront aimer ou détester à leur guise. [Festival du film de Miami]
