I've had pretty decent luck lately with good animated stories that have a great, horror-like atmosphere. Blood: The Last Vampire is a beautiful example of how horror can be made in animated form. It has a great atmosphere and the story is not bad either. This is something that would have worked well in a longer series, which also eventually led to the spin-offs that Blood had.
