Début des années 1950 en Hongrie, en pleine période du communisme stalinien. Les aventures malencontreuses de Pelikán, gardien de digue sur le Danube, ancien résistant, bon communiste, mais dont l’imprudence et la maladresse lui valent de fréquents séjours en prison. Constamment secouru par un ancien camarade de combat, devenu ministre, Pelikán doit pourtant, un jour, témoigner contre lui dans un procès. Pour conditionner ce témoin cher, le chef de la police, le camarade Virág, lui prépare des traitements spéciaux entre intimidations et récompenses. Lors du procès, il comprend qu’il ait été instrumentalisé et s’y refuse... Il se trouve alors condamné à mort à son tour. Quand on le conduit à l’échafaud c’est le bourreau qui a disparu... Le Témoin est une satire politique décapante sur les procès staliniens en Hongrie. Interdit pendant 10 ans, le film a été présenté pour la première fois à l’international au Festival de Cannes, en 1981, pour devenir culte par la suite. (Clavis Films)

One of Hungary's most famous films, a satirical comedy about the ills of socialism that still surprises with its ideas and originality. The narrative is peppered with witty interludes that speed up the plot, and the film not only mocks the nonsensically contrived communist processes and activities by involving the confused and intrinsically uncorrupted figure of a simple dam-keeper, but above all delivers the important message that it pays to keep one's own head, even when a cunning intellectual tries to plant his own ideas in it. Trying to change a person is reprehensible and will backfire on the guilty party, no matter how much of a jerk we try to change. The actors are wonderful and some scenes, such as the celebratory tasting of the first Hungarian orange, are not only brilliantly funny in themselves, but also help to effectively punctuate the overall satirical action. 90%
