L'Étau de Munich est un film inspiré du best-seller international de Robert Harris. À l'automne 1938, l'Europe est au bord du précipice. Adolf Hitler se prépare à envahir la Tchécoslovaquie et le gouvernement de Neville Chamberlain tente désespérément de trouver une issue pacifique à la crise. Dans ce contexte de tension internationale, Hugh Legat, fonctionnaire britannique, et Paul von Hartmann, diplomate allemand, se rendent à Munich pour participer à la conférence de la dernière chance. Tandis que les négociations débutent, les deux anciens amis se retrouvent au cœur d'un jeu de dupes aux conséquences potentiellement dramatiques.
