Super Cub

This anime series was one of the big surprises of the anime season Spring 2021! I have seen a couple of anime series about motorcycling before and based on their content I had a certain notion of what to expect, however, in many ways, it turned out to be completely different from what I had initially thought it would be. Super Cub is a really enjoyable and heartwarming anime series, which is endearingly unpretentious, realistic, and simple. The anime is devoid of any cheap comedy skits. I was surprised that the characters were not hyperactive or excessively loud (hysterical, screaming) - they were just normal. The anime series goes into great lengths to show motorcycling: there are scenes featuring various modifications and repairs, you can watch a character experience being new to motorcycling, and that feeling when suddenly their horizons are expanded. It almost gives the impression that Honda Super Cub can solve all your problems, although at the very end the main female protagonist clearly explains that there is much more to it than that. I liked the narrative style, the pacing, and the soundtrack. Super Cub is also a lovely example of how you can draw a 3D model of a motorcycle, put it into a moving environment and make it look good. Another thing I really liked was the female protagonist herself, she is slightly introverted and down to earth, which makes her likable and this does not change that much for her even after her world is changed by motorbikes, which was the opposite of what I had expected, which was a pleasant surprise. Plus, she has a terribly warm and kind smile. The other two girls were very nice too. All in all, this anime series pleasantly and believably presented most of the reasons why someone might like motorcycling and what it entails. In other words, I could fully understand the girls' love for the machines. 8/10. (23/06/2021)
