Shazam ! (2019)

anglais For me, one of the worst comic book movies in recent memory. The acting is at the level of B-movies and the TV visuals definitely don't add much to it (the CGI looks like a ten-year old movie), and the childish humour didn't really appeal to me either. Mark Strong is unconvincing as the villain, the action is mostly nonexistent and the finale is plain to the point of woe. Santa at the end was fun, but I won't even remember the film after a while. Nothing for me and at times I was even ashamed. 40%

Dragons 3 : Le monde caché (2019)

anglais Each episode is four and five years apart, leaving absolutely no chance to remember any characters or previous events, so I got a little lost. The animation is solid, but there’s not enough humor for my taste and I wasn't too entertained by the action. For me the whole trilogy is overrated. 60%.

The Silence (2019)

anglais John R. Leonetti, director of Annabelle, has a shot with Netflix and delivers a little sibling to A Quiet Place and Bird Box about killer bats and it's sadly just average. Leonetti is a solid cinematographer, but he hasn't been very successful as a director so far. The main family is quite likeable but the post-apocalyptic road-movie movie line doesn't surprise with anything; pretty much everything has been handled better in previous films and the bats look decent but for my taste they didn't have that much room to show off (the gore is almost non-existent). Luckily it doesn't get boring, there is the occasional suspenseful scene, but A Quiet Place and Bird Box were both much better. 55%

Terre maudite (2018)

anglais For a debut, the direction is solid, it looks nice, the acting is convincing, but the pace is very slow to uninteresting and the horror elements are sparse. Rather, the film is a psychological depressing feminist drama about an isolated woman haunted by demons. I liked the music and at least something started to happen in the finale, but I was rather bored. 50%

Simetierre (2019)

anglais I haven't read the book, and I wasn't too impressed with the 80s movie, so I'm pleasantly surprised here. For the first time in a while, a mainstream horror film that doesn't try to be weird and controversial, but is very audience friendly (there are jump-scares and even blood), so as pure horror entertainment everything is on point here, as it should be. The actors are decent and there are thankfully no illogical missteps, visually it's an inoffensive standard and the horror scenes are effective. The finale is nicely atmospheric and uncompromising and the denouement is certainly a surprise. I'm satisfied. 80%.

Deadly Class (2018) (série)

anglais The best comic book series ever, and quite possibly a dream come true. Deadly Class has just about everything I love in the movie world: a school setting, bullying, assassins, philosophical musings, cinematic allusions, beautiful women, perfect action, a decent amount of violence, solid chemistry between characters, decent plot twists, a stamp of originality, and a twisted serial killer?!! What more could you ask for, I guess it's like making a cocktail at home and throwing in five of your favorite ingredients and you'll have a taste orgasm. The story focuses on a high school for assassins with strict rules and interesting subjects (instead of chemistry, there's poison science and typical homework means going out to kill someone in the streets). There are also prison-like gangs (Mexicans, a Japanese assassin clan, Nazis and nerds). There are some very likeable characters (a black pacifist, a Mexican Harley Quinn, a Japanese samurai, a Gothic "vampire", a cocky Russian, and many others), all with horrific pasts (each episode shows a flashback about a different character in comic book style, and this is one of the series' very strong moments). The protagonist is also excellent, with charisma to spare, and Benedict Wong as the stern teacher, you’d probably want to write down his philosophical musings out on a A4 paper. The action is definitely to be commended, there are various fights with diverse choreography and blood is of course not spared. I was very impressed by the dialogue, which is both witty and apt, and there are plenty of movie references. To top it all off, there's also the rampaging serial killer Fuck Face, a burnt-faced psychopath with a penchant for goats and dogs. The finale is one of the best I've seen in years. It has elements of home invasion and hixploitation, where a house is painted with blood and corpses until it reminded me of Evil Dead, plus the Mexican cartel intrigue... Loaded. Recommended! Awesome fun. Umbrella Academy looks ridiculous next to Deadly Class. 100%.

Le Grand Bain (2018)

anglais A rather tepid comedy for France, where the biggest attraction is Benoit Poelvoorde, who for my taste doesn't have as much space as he should. The male Aquabelles are a novel idea and the casting is spot on. Once the uncompromisingly foul-mouthed wheelchair coach arrives on the scene, the fun is taken care of. The finale is pleasantly touching. An enjoyable film, but more for one viewing only. France has offered funnier pieces. 65%

Dumbo (2019)

anglais Tim Burton made me very happy with this tale. The acting is very good (Colin Farrell and Eva Green are charming and Michael Keaton as the villain is solid). All the circus acts are impressive and once Dumbo wiggles his ears, the goosebumps and tears are on point. Towards the end the film is also unexpectedly quite suspenseful, nicely paced and a little scary for the kids in places. I enjoyed it. 80%.

Misumisó (2018)

anglais This Japanese revenge bully splatter sounded appealing, but unfortunately didn't live up to its potential. As long as the film focused on school bullying, it felt believable and quite gritty, but the revenge aspect itself is uninteresting due to the not so good CGI effects (the gore is very bad) and rather than excitement or enthusiasm, it makes you laugh and cry at the same time. There are a few interesting moments, but due to the long running time, I wasn't very entertained by the end. 3 stars and being generous. 50%

Amsusalin (2018)

anglais Serial killers are a very popular theme in South Korea, see the excellent I Saw the Devil or The Chaser, which are among the most brutal films of this genre, and this new release deserves praise as well. The film focuses on the psychological confrontation between a detective and a serial killer who confesses to multiple murders and puzzles the detective as to where he may have buried bodies. The film stands primarily on excellent performances, with veteran Kim Yoon-Seok doing an outstanding job and manic psychopath, and Ju Ji-Hoon doing the same. Although it is more or less devoid of violence, it is a solid film based on real events (the detective is still investigating the case today) and it also took home a couple of festival awards. Despite the slower pace, very engaging and immersive. 75%.
