Married in America 2 is the second part in Michael Apted's series about being married in the United States. In 2001, he filmed the first instalment, which featured nine couples on the eve of their marriages. Apted, who had already used a similar concept in his long-running documentary series 7Up, looked for a cross-section of American society - couples who differed in religion, social stature, race and age: a lesbian couple, a couple that had been married before and one in which the woman earns more than the man. He asked them about their backgrounds, how they met one another and what they hoped to get out of married life. Five years later, Apted revisited them. Just as in the first part, the interviewees talk openly about their current situation. Some have already had kids, others are no longer together, or back together after a separation. Major financial, emotional and family problems have driven some couples apart, but have brought others even closer. And in answer to the question of how it is to be married, they all say the same thing without exception: "It's hard." (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
