The military rising against the Republic and the outbreak of the terrible Spanish Civil War took place in July 1936. The streets were taken over by the working class and the anarchists thought that the social revolution had begun. Public shows were socialized and a new model of production and screening which had never been seen before in the history of cinema now emerged. So the workers were the owners and managers of the industry through the unions. Educational and propaganda documentaries, feature films, comedies, children’s musicals, and the most expensive film in Spanish history to date, stand out among the huge number of films made. Within such an eclectic production we can see melodramas, forerunners of neo-realism, influences from French realism, Soviet inspired avant-gardism. A varied and fascinating film production.
