Sur une route californienne, un modeste employé de commerce se voit pris en chasse par un énorme camion. Une course-poursuite effrénée s'engage... A tout juste 25 ans, Steven Spielberg réalise un formidable road-movie où un banal représentant de commerce doit affronter un camion, redoutable monstre d'acier. Le coup de génie du cinéaste, c'est de ne jamais révéler le visage du chauffeur dont on finit par se demander s'il existe seulement. Du coup, Spielberg fait du poids lourd une créature fantastique déshumanisée, symbole d'une époque qui a sacralisé la machine et réduit l'être humain à l'état de pantin privé de libre-arbitre.
