Back in the 19th century people already questioned the use of prison sentences."That only produces more criminals", was the criticism. Nowadays there are special training programmes intended to help imprisoned criminals to escape the often vicious circle of their existence. Big boys don't Cry follows seven hardened criminals bank robbers and drug addicts among them in the Norwegian Ostokrets fengsel prison during one such rehabilitation programme. Some of them have been in gangland since their teens. After a seven-month intensive training programme the participants in the project are offered a job and a house. But for them it is often harder to survive in the 'normal' world than it is to hold out in the 'hard' world of prisons and crime. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
