In 2005, bandleader Jesse Sharps led a summit and recording session bringing together young players from the LA improvised music scene with local legends Azar Lawrence, Dwight Trible, Kamau Daaood, Michael Sessions, Ndugu Chancler, Phil Ranelin, Roberto Miranda, and Taumbu Ector. Members of Horace Tapscott's Pan Afrikan People's Arkestra participated along with Kamasi Washington, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Brandon Coleman, Randal Fisher, Nick Rosen, and Joey Dosik who were some of the up and coming young players from the local scene at the time. The Gathering's objective is to document local Los Angeles area talent and composers with a focus on giving young players a venue to share their compositions as well as feature exceptional works from the archives of The Pan Afrikan People's Arkestra, African American composers, and others that have gone under the radar over the years. The band continues to evolve and attract new players, stretching the boundaries of improvised music and performance. (Pan African Film Festival)
