Au début du xxe siècle en Bavière, le jeune Thomas Törless intègre un pensionnat, réservé aux enfants de l’aristocratie. Fragments of students’ life in Austro-Hungarian student residence dorm tied together by the philosophical perplexities of a young man, Törless. If it weren’t for the excellent final sequence, the movie has otherwise very little to grab the attention, even though it is hard to fault it for anything either. It lacks any distinct positive aspects, but also any shortcomings. The actors are good (mainly the one who plays von Basini), the viewer must be prepared for a certain amount of sluggishness and the environment and the relationships amongst students were depicted realistically. Considering this is Schlöndorff’s debut, it isn’t bad, just somehow… bland.
