A Flag Without a Country

As it advances across Syria and Iraq, IS, the extremist militant group, poses a huge threat to the people in the region. Ghobadi turns his camera on those in the greatest immediate danger by visiting a Kurdish refugee camp on the Syrian border, further zooming in on two central characters: Kurdish singer Helly Luv and the first Kurdish pilot, Nariman. Luv, back in her home country from Finland, participates in relief activities for children while also writing songs calling for Kurdish independence and an end to war. For this, she is constantly exposed to threats and violence. Meanwhile, Nariman has injured his leg in an accident. He opens a school to train future pilots but finds it difficult to get students to enroll. In order to keep his school open, he looks for students in refugee camps. (Busan International Film Festival)
