Durant les derniers mois de la guerre de Sécession, le Major Dundee, commandant nordiste, poursuit des Indiens Apaches qui ont attaqué un poste de cavalerie, massacré ses occupants, et enlevé des enfants. Manquant d'hommes, il prend la tête d'une troupe hétéroclite composée de volontaires et de prisonniers sudistes, dont le chef est son ennemi intime.
