Vatican and The Third Reich, The

The election of Cardinal Pacelli as Pope in March 1939 was unquestionable. His spiritual and intellectual prestige was well established, and he had proven diplomatic experience having been nuncio in Berlin and Secretary of State under Pius XI. However, in 1963, a few years after his death, his reputation came to be questioned thanks to the scandal caused by the premiere of the play The Deputy, by Rolf Hochhuth. This text speaks of the Vatican's relations with Germany during World War II and the responsibility for the inaction of Pope Pius XII versus the Holocaust.
