1965. Voilà deux ans que les Américains s’enlisent au Viêtnam. Le moral des troupes baisse et, avec lui, les chances de victoire. Sur la base arrière de Saigon, en zone démilitarisée, l’animateur Adrian Cronauer vient reprendre la tranche horaire matinale de la radio militaire. Loin des formats poussiéreux de la langue de bois officielle, ses commentaires irrévérencieux et son art très rock de la programmation musicale suscitent l’adhésion immédiate des deuxièmes classes. “Good morning, Vietnam!”, le cri de ralliement qu’il hurle dans le micro en guise d’introduction, devient un slogan phare. Bientôt star locale, Adrian ferraille contre la censure et des gradés hostiles, tandis que son attirance croissante pour une jeune Vietnamienne et la sanglante réalité de la guerre lui ouvrent peu à peu les yeux sur la tragédie en cours.
