The Carousel Never Stops Turning

Résumés(1)

This movie was not written by somebody, but it deals with history witnessed by things. However, the level of history here is neither the record of a unique moment, such as a great invention, nor a revolutionary moment like the overthrow of a social system. The history the movie deals with is a diachronic bundle of private histories of characters living in Indonesia now. A young bride leaves for an unknown world in a military jeep after killing her old husband, who pacifies himself in the same old military jeep, still bearing the trace of a widow. Also, three women in a band take a journey in the same jeep to create special memories for themselves. However, the movie is not a simple omnibus that presents a bundle of micro-histories. In the scenes the jeep doesn't appear the movie shows the fierce struggles of people left on a base ruined by a forced demolition. Their fights mesh with other characters' micro-histories, giving us the opportunity to explore the social aspect of contemporary Indonesia. (Busan International Film Festival)
