As the Black Death spreads across 14th-century Europe, a conflict of values is embodied by two characters. Gottfried is a knight in a bishop’s service, a person completely subservient and loyal to an institution that dominates the society of the time. Lord Siegfried, commander of a yeoman estate’s woodland stronghold, epitomizes the individualised values of honour and righteousness. Both attitudes and their bearers are tested and forever altered by a dramatic conflict, which involves retribution against the Jewish community in a nearby village. (Art Film Fest)
