Lefty Brown, 63 ans, est le camarade un peu gauche du fameux héros du Far West et shérif Edward Johnson. Il travaille également depuis des lustres dans la ferme de celui-ci. Johnson venant d’être élu sénateur du Montana, Lefty doit maintenant s’en occuper à plein temps. La femme de Johnson, en revanche, doute qu’il soit à la hauteur de la tâche. Mais quand le jeune sénateur est soudain abattu, l’éternel numéro deux sort de l’ombre de l’idole, jure de le venger et, seul comme jamais, galope à travers les grands espaces arides. Apprenant cela par hasard, un vieux compagnon s’inquiète et se met en route afin de ramener Lefty chez lui. Mais celui-ci est trop occupé à devenir lui-même un héros... Le réalisateur Jared Moshé rompt avec les idoles du western et met la vengeance entre les mains du faire-valoir, à grands coups de revolver. Il fait ainsi renaître le genre de façon à la fois moderne et extrêmement nostalgique. (Zurich Film Festival)

For guys, about guys. A western without unnecessary modern tricks and improvements. A bit of an homage to classic flicks with a strong story of boyhood, friendship, betrayal, and revenge. The plot is simple and straightforward, but Bill Pullman is great as a senile cowboy who decides to defy time and show that he's not quite old enough yet; his most compelling role since Independence Day. A level-up for fans of westerns.

The Ballad of Lefty Brown is a film that wants to pay homage to its predecessors and live up to its poetic title, while contemplating manhood, honour, and friendship in a wild era when an eye for an eye was still a more valid law than the real law. A pleasant experience primarily for those who welcome with open arms any more intimate American production that doesn't want to please the masses and relies on the favour of more receptive film consumers. It's not nearly as good as the actors would deserve, but if you want one hundred minutes of a simple, nice-looking western with a likeable protagonist, it's definitely worth your attention.

Westerns are back in greater numbers and in pretty good shape. The Ballad of Lefty Brown isn't breathtaking, but it is one of those films that is just good work. First and foremost in terms of the acting, where Bill Pullman excels and enjoys the role, but also in the story, whose calm flow can pull you in.
