C'est "l'homme par qui le scandale arrive presque à chaque film". Ce cinéaste hollandais, pour qui le sexe, la violence et la religion sont "les trois principaux éléments sur terre", aime appuyer là où ça fait mal. Né en 1938, il a grandi à La Haye sous l'occupation allemande, dans la fureur des bombardements et des exécutions sommaires. "Pour moi, c'était comme ça que le monde tournait", raconte-t-il. Inspiré par la BD comme par la Nouvelle Vague, athée mais passionné par la figure historique de Jésus, Paul Verhoeven laisse transparaître ses zones d'ombre et sa complexité à travers ses personnages, et les pousse à la transgression. I don't know Paul Verhoeven's pre-American films, and this documentary did not overly entice me with its teasers, however much praise they received. This is because there was praise about everything, because if sometimes something went wrong (Showgirls), it of course didn't succeed because people weren't ready for it and that they only appreciated it later. Well, in the case of Showgirls, the time, I think, hasn't come yet. But what do I know, maybe the creators have seen into the future. Otherwise, I liked the passage through Verhoeven's life, his complete beginnings... And then, of course, the parts about Robocop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, and Starship Troopers, which are action films in my opinion. It's too bad that there was no mention of Hollow Man, which, in my opinion, will get its appreciation sooner than the aforementioned Las Vegas affair.
