Thanks to the fact that Graham Greene was (and still is) considered to be one of the very best writers of serious spy novels, he could get away with writing a lighter version of the same. Although, lighter... In fact this is an absolutely serious spy thriller through and through; just the personable main protagonist and the bureaucratic claptrap lighten the mood. And the humor is sparing and based on the fact that you know how a regular hero of this genre would behave in the situations that Wormold finds himself in.
