Demain tout commence

For me, Omar Sy is probably the foremost French actor of family comedies with a hint of contemporary drama. Any movie that he appears in is a joy to watch. By the way, the homage to Eddie Murphy was quite appropriate since they look awfully alike. And with his positive approach to acting along with his personality, he couldn’t possibly spoil a movie, including this one. Two Is a Family is a beautifully filmed human, amusing story that’s worth waiting for. It's a bit of a drag, but you get such a pleasant, warm feeling watching the movie that you don't really care, because this kind sense of humor can caress your soul. (31/08/2017)

Definitive proof that Omar Sy is the king of dramedies with a social subtext. The Intouchables could have been a coincidence, Samba could have been god luck, but this time it's a sure bet. On his home turf, this walking breath of optimism simply can't be surpassed. And even though the twists may seem expected and overly emotional, a smaller but more important idea about fully enjoying life emerges throughout the whole story, opening one's eyes. Je n'ai rien contre les films émouvants pleins de douceur, mais Demain tout commence est un calcul manipulateur et superficiel inconfortablement tiraillé entre la poursuite d'une réflexion sérieuse sur les relations parentales à la manière des drames européens contemporains et le choix inapproprié d'une stylisation comique hollywoodienne, les deux approches contradictoires se perturbant mutuellement. Au final, c'est comme si les créateurs avaient voulu faire une nouvelle version de Kramer contre Kramer ayant l'apparence du Big Daddy de Sandler, ce qui tue efficacement toute impression de réalisme. Le premier quart d'heure est encore assez bon, mais le reste est une convulsion artificielle trop amère pour une comédie et trop plate, transparente et peu crédible pour un drame. (02/11/2017)

The French know how to make dramas and comedies, and they are also good at mixing genres. Two Is a Family is more on a serious note, but it also features many humorous moments, especially provided by Antoine Bertrand as Bernie. During the first two acts I thought I would give the film a solid three stars, but in the last act it all went up a notch and in the end the film played a lot on my emotions, and I ate it up hook, line and sinker. Two Is a Family isn't a comedy of the kind that will have you rolling with laughter, it's more of a humorously paced story of a father and daughter trying to live their life together to the fullest despite more than one obstacle. Les Français se sont distingués une fois encore et il n’y a qu’eux pour tourner de cette façon un film à la fois touchant et amusant. Je vois d’ici la façon dont un tel thème et un tel scénario auraient été traités dans une production américaine… Omar Sy est devenu l’acteur de facto pour ce genre de films depuis Intouchables et le reste de l’équipe lui enjambe joliment le pas. La fragile et éthérée Clémence Poésy s’est, pour une fois, bien illustrée. Après un temps d’attente, revoici une œuvre de qualité, mais venant du côté français, c’était presque gagné d’avance. For the second time in two days, I had to turn off the cynical bastard in me to enjoy an endearingly heart-aching movie. If I had been looking forward to a great comedy, I would have been disappointed, but as a drama, it works perfectly. I don't know why, but I like Omar Sy, whether he's playing an unexpected dad, a caretaker, a cook, or a gangster. He's accompanied by superb Clémence Poésy here, and it sure is a success. Maybe I also liked the film because I was expecting more of a goofy flick with a lovey-dovey happy ending. Instead, I got a drama that kept me entertained and the two hours just raced by. I hope the French filmmakers don't plan on making more of this sort of thing, I'd hate to change my negative attitude towards the French cinema. (27/08/2017)

The story of this film is a bit expected, there's nothing all that downright surprising about it, but you have to give it credit for being so well cast that it just sweeps you away. Omar Sy is such a great actor that he can handle any scene, whether it's a hotshot, a father loving his daughter, or an overwhelmed man. Everything works for him perfectly. (16/02/2018)

Compared to the Mexican film Instructions Not Included, Two Is a Family has a much better cast. Especially the likable Omar Sy and the charming Gloria Colston deserve credit for the fact that the plot moves along nicely. It is not as funny as the Mexican film, but the dramatic storyline is skillfully interwoven with slightly comedic elements, while the atmosphere is perfectly underscored by a very good soundtrack. Which I definitely find more appealing than some big spectacle. (70%) (15/08/2020)

Les Français ont réussi un nouveau tour de force : susciter toutes les émotions possibles en une seule personne. Vous rirez, vous serez ému, mais vous serez aussi furieux et vous aurez envie de tuer quelqu’un. Je pense que la colère a pris le dessus dans mon cas. Certaines personnes, en l’occurrence la mère de Gloria, n’ont pas la moindre honte. Elle n’a vraiment aucune pudeur et elle a beaucoup de culot de débarquer et de réclamer quelque chose qu’elle n’a absolument pas le droit d’obtenir… ou je suppose que si en fait, à en croire le système judiciaire français. Oui, ça lui conviendrait bien finalement, de déposer l’enfant, de laisser les années les plus difficiles de la parentalité au père, et puis de débarquer des années plus tard en annonçant : « Coucou, je suis ta maman, alors maintenant je te récupère, ok ? » C’est un beau film, avec un message important, mais là je suis juste énervée. :) (03/05/2017)
