“What does love mean to you?” After six years of shooting in France, Poland, Russia, the Himalayas and Papua New Guinea, and surviving floods and malaria, the creators of the documentary Secrets of Love present the final cut of their impressive work. The collection of love stories across continents offers comparisons with exotic cultures, and their approaches to relationships, marriage and obligations, on opposite sides of the planet at the same moment. The film does not only focus on couples in love and their lives together. Each narrative is part of the complex net of places, stories and cultures of all the others; from Indonesian tribes and their traditions to young French couples kissing in a subway. Polish director Krystian Matysek has made a number of successful exotic documentaries linking topics globally, such as Apocalypse Unlimited, from 2006. His latest work is no exception. The documentary assembles impressive shots of the assets of the places presented and their cultures into one large mosaic, united by the mystery of love. (Academia Film Olomouc)
