A visual essay in five parts, Evaporating Borders is told through a series of vignettes and explores the lives of asylum seekers and political refugees on the island of Cyprus. Cyprus is one of the easiest points of entry into Fortress Europe. A prime destination for smugglers from Turkey. Through a microcosm of the current situation in Cyprus, the film explores global restrictive tolerance and immigration practices throughout Europe and the Western world, where migrating populations have become subject to a variety of human rights abuses. The film looks into what it means to be displaced, it examines the idea of belonging, the notion of diaspora, exile, migration and travel. It proposes a production of knowledge beyond Eurocentric fundamentalisms, away from the idea that there is one sole epistemic tradition from which to achieve truth/universality and instead looks toward "pluriversality".
