Par une nuit ténébreuse, un déserteur du nom de Jean arrive au Havre dans l'espoir de quitter la France. En attendant un bateau, il trouve refuge au bout des quais, dans une baraque autour de laquelle gravitent plusieurs marginaux. Il y fait la rencontre de Nelly, une belle et mystérieuse jeune femme dont le regard le bouleverse. Cette dernière vit dans la terreur de son tuteur, le misérable Zabel, lui-même racketté par une bande de voyous. Par amour, Jean se mêle aux affaires de Nelly et met les pieds dans un engrenage périlleux... (Carlotta Films)

A classical French melodrama with elements of the noir genre about a military deserter who encounters a fateful love and several men from the outskirts of society during his journey. Their encounter has fatal consequences for him. High-quality cinematography, and a top-notch performance by Jean Gabin, who was already creating space for himself to become the greatest French male film star at the time. Plot-wise, however, it is relatively unremarkable. Michel Simon takes on the role of a villain as if from bad anti-Semitic films, appearing as a greedy and lascivious Jew. Overall impression: 65%.
