En 1999, un employé d'une carrière minière est retrouvé assassiné et son corps dispersé aux quatre coins de la Mandchourie. L'inspecteur Zhang mène l'enquête, mais doit rapidement abandonner l'affaire après avoir été blessé lors de l'interpellation des principaux suspects. Cinq ans plus tard, deux nouveaux meurtres sont commis dans la région, tous deux liés à l'épouse de la première victime. Devenu agent de sécurité, Zhang décide de reprendre du service. A brilliant genre pirouette that works inventively with the influences of noir and hints of a hardboiled detective story, connecting them with typically Asian techniques and storytelling rhythm. In many aspects, this peculiar oscillation between disjointed moods and explosive twists in the shots is reminiscent of Joon-ho Bong's phenomenal detective epic Memories of Murder. At any rate, Yinan Diao is original. The work with color, rhythm, pre-camera space and characters is uniquely focused, clear, unpretentiously hinting and masterfully plays with expectations. The fireworks point with a change in the relationship of the femme fatale is completely disarming. Laughter and tears. Definitely one of the films of the year. [90%]

Rather lacking as an "existential" noir crime drama, but as a captivating and hypnotically atmospheric depiction of the genius loci of a Chinese mining province frozen to the bone and covered in snow, it is unique and even brilliant.
