A propagandistic film presents North Korea as a country where the working class can fulfil their dreams, while avoiding any depiction of today's reality. A female miner, Kim, desires to become an acrobat and she will clearly reach her goal despite obstacles. Similarly, the European producers probably wanted to be the first ones to penetrate the impenetrable North Korean film industry and therefore created a fairy-tale full of colors and smiles in cooperation with a local crew. What provides an escape from reality to a North Korean viewer might remind us in Europe how manipulative a film can be. (Febiofest)
