After several successful action-adventure films in Hong Kong, Ringo Lam made UNDECLARED WAR, his first film in English with an international cast. It stars Olivia Hussey (Franco Zeffirelli's ROMEO AND JULIET) as Rebecca, a member of the international terrorist group the World Liberation Army. Starting in Poland with the murder of an American diplomat and his family, the action quickly moves to Hong Kong, where CIA agent Gary Redner (Peter Lapis), the U.S. ambassador (David Hedison), and local policeman Inspector Bong (Danny Lee) team up to stop Rebecca and her partner, Hannibal (Vernon G. Wells). Although Redner and Bong take an instant dislike to each other in typical buddy film fashion, they are great friends by the end. Lee had previously appeared on the other side of the law as a criminal gang member in Lam's CITY ON FIRE. Like that film, there is no lack of action, gunfire, and car chases as Bong and Redner try to stop the terrorists from their planned attack on an international business conference.
